Onion Agent v1.0.0 · Windows 10/11 · $39 once

Tor & OSINT research tool

Research the hidden web from a machine that answers to you.

Onion Agent searches onion indexes, reads pages over Tor, and has a model of your choosing summarise what it finds — all from one window on your own computer. It brings its own Tor. There is no account to make.

What stays on your machine and what leaves it Your queries, API keys, notes, evidence and research history stay on your machine. The only thing that crosses the boundary is Tor traffic. There is no server belonging to Onion Agent. YOUR MACHINE Your queries Your API key Notes & evidence History The app itself, and the Tor process it starts and supervises only this crosses TOR NETWORK OUR SERVERS there aren't any

Nothing is uploaded, because there is nowhere to upload it to. Your key talks to your provider, billed to you.

What it does

A research loop, not a chat toy

Searches working onion indexes
Torch, TorDex and OnionLand, queried over Tor and returned ranked and de-duplicated. Dead engines have been removed rather than left to fail quietly.
Reads the pages it finds
Fetches each source over Tor and extracts the text, so you can ask questions about a page instead of picking through raw markup.
Cites what it used
Every page, title and quote behind an answer is kept and exportable to Markdown or JSON. An answer you can't cite isn't worth much.
Runs the model you choose
Groq, OpenAI, Anthropic, OpenRouter and others by API key — or Ollama for a fully local setup, including uncensored open-weight models where the work calls for them.
Remembers how you work
Standing context carries between sessions. Search terms and onion addresses deliberately don't — research targets are not durable facts.
Takes plugins
Installed by you, from the author's own repository, and run as separate processes. Nothing is downloaded unless you ask for it.

The application

One window, no browser tab

It installs per-user, needs no administrator rights, and starts Tor for you — bootstrap progress and all.

Onion Agent running: sidebar with chat history, a Tor status indicator reading active, and the selected model shown in the top bar.
Onion Agent v1.0.0 — Tor connected, model selected, nothing signed into.

Before you buy

Two things worth knowing up front

Windows will call the publisher unknown

The build isn't code-signed yet. Choose More info, then Run anyway. Every release publishes a SHA-256 so you can check the file you got is the file that was built.

First launch takes about a minute

That's Tor bootstrapping a circuit, and the splash screen shows the real percentage while it happens. Later starts are quick.

Questions

The ones worth asking

Do you see my searches?

No. There's no server involved. The app talks to Tor, and to whichever AI provider you configured using your key. Nothing reaches us because there is no "us" for it to reach.

Why do I bring my own API key?

So the usage is yours, billed to you, at your provider's rate — and so this can be a one-time purchase instead of a subscription covering somebody else's inference bill. Groq's free tier is enough to start.

Can I run it with no cloud at all?

Yes, for the AI half — install Ollama and point it at a local model. Searching the network still needs the network.

Is this legal?

The software is a client for a public anonymity network, the same one Tor Browser uses. What you research with it is your responsibility, and the licence says so plainly. Onion Agent is not affiliated with The Tor Project.

What are the requirements?

Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit, and about 400 MB of disk. No administrator rights are needed to install, and it uninstalls like normal Windows software.

Is there a Mac build?

Not yet. The code supports macOS; the build has to be produced and signed on a Mac. It's on the list, and 1.x updates are included.
